Most homeowners think the heat pump grant is for the big wet systems — radiators, a cylinder, a fortnight of upheaval. They do not know that an air-to-air system qualifies too, for £2,500, through the same Boiler Upgrade Scheme route.
Most air-con installers do not tell them. That is an odd place to leave money, because it is the single most persuasive thing you could put in front of somebody weighing up a quote.
Why this one is different
With heat pumps you are competing against every other installer who also mentions the grant. With air-to-air you are usually the first person telling the homeowner it exists at all. You are not winning an argument — you are delivering news.
The strongest position in any quote is being the one who told them something nobody else did.
The trap, and why the checker matters
The risk with a generic grant calculator is the opposite of helpful: it shows a homeowner £7,500 for work you do not do. Now you are explaining why they are getting a third of what a website told them they would, before you have even measured anything.
GrantCheck is configured to your trade before it goes live. An air-con installer’s checker is bound to the air-to-air scheme in the engine, not in the template — it physically cannot render the £7,500 figure. That is not a styling choice; it is what stops a website setting up a conversation you cannot win.
Where Google Ads fits
This is the part most installers skip, and it is where the money is.
You can buy an almost perfect click. Somebody in your town, on their phone, typing the exact phrase. The problem is never the click — it is that the click lands on a homepage that says “grants available, contact us”. They searched a specific question and got a brochure, so they go back to Google and try the next installer. You paid either way.
Point the same advert at a checker and the loop closes: the advert promises an answer, the page gives one in about thirty seconds, and the homeowner hands over a name while they are still looking at a real figure. Same budget, same keyword, completely different economics — and you can see exactly which search produced which enquiry.
That is the whole model: paid traffic into your own tool, not into somebody else’s portal.
The bit nobody explains about buying leads
A lead portal does not find you a customer. It runs the advert, catches the homeowner, and then sells that one homeowner to several installers at once. You are not buying a job — you are buying a place in a race, and you are paying for the privilege of being the third person to ring somebody who has already been rung twice.
Look at what actually happened there. The portal owns the advert, the landing page and the relationship. You own a phone number and a stopwatch. That is why the same enquiry gets cheaper for them and dearer for you every year: they are selling the same thing more times.
Generating your own is the same machine, pointed the other way. You run the advert. It lands on your website. The tool answers the question and takes the name. Nobody else gets a copy, because there is nobody else in the chain.
The seasonal problem this also solves
Air conditioning sells itself for about eleven weeks a year and then goes quiet. Heating is the other half of the same box, and the grant is the reason to talk about it in October. A checker on your site turns that from a conversation you have to start into one the homeowner starts.
